The Sapphire is Cursed
A lost sense of agency can manifest in depression, exhaustion, or helplessness. In such times, it can be expedient to seek the aid of any and all tools to regain self-belief: including religion, superstitions, and myths.
As Thomas Shelby, from Peaky Blinders does here:
Thomas: [Holding Sapphire] My wife was wearing it the night she was shot...
Thomas: and I lie awake at night. at 4 in the fucking morning and I blame myself for her death.
Thomas: I pushed some people too far.
Madame Boswell: You want me to tell you this jewel is cursed.
Madame Boswell: and then her death won't be all your fault.
Thomas: If I believed in priests, I would confess and ask for forgiveness. But all I have is you, Madame Boswell. I have a son. I have a business. I need to get some sleep...
Madame Boswell: It is cursed. I feel its curse burning through my heart.
Madame Boswell: Bless you. You'll have good fortune from now on.
Thomas is freed; his soul is lit anew
